Specialists from the Museum of National History and Archaeology Constanța discovered an intact sarcophagus from the Roman period on Tuesday, in the city of Constanța. The tomb was identified on the northern edge of the Tomis necropolis, and preliminary research indicates that it belonged to a child.
A rich funerary inventory was found inside the sarcophagus, including personal adornments, a coin, two clay toys and flower garlands. The discovery is considered remarkable because the sarcophagus was preserved intact, allowing archaeologists to analyze both the structure of the tomb and the objects placed alongside the child.
At the time the information was transmitted, research on the sarcophagus and the recovery of the archaeological materials were still under way. Specialists are expected to establish further details about the exact period, the funerary context and the significance of the objects discovered.
Museum representatives announced that additional information would be presented on Wednesday at a press conference. The discovery adds to the archaeological heritage of Tomis, an important Roman city on the Black Sea coast.
