Most of the approximately 2,200 employees of the Liberty Galați steelworks will be placed on temporary layoff starting November 1, 2026, amid the severe difficulties facing the company. The decision also affects employees of Liberty Tubular Products and comes as workers have not received their salaries since May.
Management informed employees on Thursday that operations would be temporarily suspended throughout November. By October 30, employees must complete schedules regarding the work program, while departments will determine who will continue reporting for work.
Not all employees will be sent home. Some will provide security at the steelworks and oversee the maintenance and preservation of production facilities. Company representatives say the exact number of people affected has not yet been determined.
According to an internal notice seen by News.ro, the measure is also prompted by problems related to energy supply and employee transportation. Meanwhile, employees are preparing a new protest for October 30, outside the Galați Prefecture. They are demanding explanations about the future of the steelworks, payment of outstanding salaries and the situation regarding jobs.
