During the meeting for the establishment of the Romanian Academic Council, Ioan-Aurel Pop discussed the difficulties encountered in opening a branch of the Romanian Academy in Chișinău, emphasizing the lack of an adequate legislative framework. He stated that the cultural and scientific union between Romania and the Republic of Moldova is essential, considering that the current moment is a favorable one to initiate actions in this regard. Pop mentioned that, according to a survey, the option for unification would win by 55% in the case of a referendum.

The President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, stated that she would vote for unification, while Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu expressed a similar position. Additionally, Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated that he would vote for unification with Moldova, arguing that Moldova's European integration must go through Romania. These statements have generated intense discussions about the future of relations between the two countries.
