The High Court of Cassation and Justice is hearing on Tuesday, November 3, the appeal filed by Alexandru Toader against the decision to place him in preventive detention. The son of former Justice Minister Tudorel Toader is being investigated in a case in which he is accused of rape and sexual assault, with the victims identified by prosecutors being several female students.
Alexandru Toader has been in preventive detention since October 24, after the Iași Court of Appeal approved the prosecutors’ request. He had been detained a day earlier by the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Iași Court of Appeal, being charged with rape, sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, and using his position for sexual purposes.
According to investigators, the acts allegedly took place during the period when Toader was a lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University in Iași. Prosecutors claim that the first rape allegedly occurred in November 2022, after a female student was allegedly called to the notary’s office and subsequently to the university office. The young woman later dropped out of university.
The investigation is ongoing, and the allegations are to be examined during the judicial proceedings. Tudorel Toader, who is assisting his son as a lawyer, claimed that the case represents an attack against him.
