Heckler & Koch, a German firearms manufacturer, will produce assault rifles in Cugir for the Romanian Army

Heckler & Koch, the largest German manufacturer of small arms, intends to enter the Romanian market with the production of a new type of assault rifle for the Romanian Army. The company has opened a local subsidiary and is awaiting the launch of the tender to begin the production of operationally validated equipment for NATO armies. In this context, the Ministers of Defense from Romania and Germany have signed a declaration of intent for collaboration in the field of logistics and bilateral procurement. Heckler & Koch, which supplies weapons to the Bundeswehr, is considering a framework contract for up to 250,000 assault rifles to replace the G36 model.

Romania needs up to 240,000 new units, and the German offer includes not only procurement but also local production, generating jobs. Romanian authorities will analyze several factors in choosing the supplier. Heckler & Koch is exploring the opening of a production line in Cugir, involving the transfer of know-how and critical technologies. German investments in the defense industry in Romania have evolved towards industrialization, contributing to the revitalization of local factories. The company will maintain its procurement strategy only with democratic states from the EU and NATO.
