The Romanian Army receives its first K9 howitzers and K10 vehicles from South Korea ahead of schedule

Romania has received its first batch of K9 self-propelled howitzers and logistical support vehicles from South Korea, with delivery completed ahead of the initially scheduled deadline. The equipment will undergo verification and evaluation for the Romanian Army.

The first batch includes 18 K9 howitzers and 12 K10 vehicles for transporting and replenishing ammunition in the field. The program also includes K12 vehicles intended for the recovery of military equipment. The delivery is part of the contract signed by Romania with Hanwha Aerospace on July 9, 2024, valued at approximately one billion dollars. The agreement covers 54 K9 howitzers, 36 K10 vehicles, auxiliary equipment and 18,000 155 mm projectiles.

The K9 howitzer is a tracked artillery system equipped with a 155 mm gun and a 52-caliber barrel. Its mobility allows it to rapidly change position after firing.

The remainder of the order will be produced in Petrești, Dâmbovița County. The site is scheduled to assemble 36 K9 howitzers and 24 K10 vehicles. Construction of the factory began in February 2026, and it will include assembly areas, laboratories and a testing track. Hanwha estimates that Romanian companies could provide approximately 80% of local production.
