Sorin Grindeanu, about the LGBT community: "they must have rights just like everyone else"

The leader of the PSD, Sorin Grindeanu, stated in an interview for G4Media that if he were to become prime minister, he would implement the ECHR decision regarding the recognition of same-sex couples, asserting that "I simply do not understand why it is not being implemented at this moment." When directly asked if he would apply the ruling, he replied: "Yes, that's why I am surprised. (...) I do not know why it is not being implemented. I would respect the law."

Grindeanu supported the respect for individual rights, stating that "everyone, at home, has the right to do what they want, as long as they do not infringe on the freedoms of others" and that LGBT individuals "must also have rights just like everyone else."

In 2023, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Romania violated Article 8 of the Convention – the right to respect for private and family life – in the case of same-sex couples, finding that the mere acknowledgment of the violation constitutes sufficient just satisfaction for the moral damage suffered by the applicants.

We remind that the former PSD leader, Marcel Ciolacu, stated in November 2023, when he was prime minister, that Romania is not ready to implement the ECHR decision regarding the legal status of couples formed by individuals of the same sex.
