PSD President Sorin Grindeanu said on Tuesday evening that snap elections are not a suitable scenario for Romania, although they are provided for in the Constitution. The reaction comes after reports that President Nicușor Dan could dissolve Parliament if the government led by Prime Minister-designate Luca Niculescu is not invested.
Grindeanu said he had not seen any official announcement or statement from the Presidency regarding the head of state’s intention to call snap elections. He added, however, that this possibility cannot be ruled out and that the PSD has already begun organizational preparations for a possible election.
The Social Democratic leader claims that the PNL and USR do not want snap elections, saying that the two parties are “running away” from such a scenario. Grindeanu said he was convinced that the PSD would achieve at least the result recorded in the last elections if snap elections were held.
According to sources close to the president, all options are being considered if the Niculescu government fails to receive Parliament’s vote. Calling snap elections requires following the constitutional procedures for dissolving the legislature and organizing a new election.
