Sorin Grindeanu does not rule out a PSD-AUR government until 2028, but says that AUR currently wants snap elections

Sorin Grindeanu does not rule out the formation of a PSD-AUR government by 2028, but says that such an option depends on a change in the current position of the party led by George Simion. The statement was made in the context of political negotiations to form a new government in Romania.

The PSD leader says that AUR is not currently seeking to enter government, but rather to organize early elections. Grindeanu said he recently spoke face to face with George Simion, who reportedly told him that this was the party’s political objective.

According to the PSD president, AUR wants to remain in opposition and capitalize on its rising polling numbers. Grindeanu said, however, that cooperation between the two parties cannot be ruled out if AUR decides to join the government.

The Social Democratic leader stressed that PSD and AUR do not together have the majority needed in Parliament to secure a government’s investiture. The two formations are close to the threshold of 233 votes, but do not reach it.

The statements were made after the PSD National Permanent Bureau decided not to support the government proposed by designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan. The decision is to be forwarded to the party’s National Political Council.
