Gigi Becali claims that a possible breakaway by Călin Georgescu from the sovereigntist camp and the launch of a new party could lead to the breakup of AUR. A former member of parliament representing the party and currently an unaffiliated deputy, Becali made the statements on Monday afternoon, in an interview with Digi24.
“Our only salvation from AUR is Georgescu,” Gigi Becali said on Monday afternoon to Digi 24.
The owner of FCSB says that Georgescu has “caught on” to George Simion’s position and is expected to distance himself from AUR’s leadership. In his opinion, the only formation capable of seriously competing with the party would be one built around Călin Georgescu.
Becali claims that AUR’s publicly displayed sympathy toward Georgescu is false and says he has heard that a party is already prepared for launch. He believes that its emergence could radically change the balance of power in the sovereigntist camp.
The statements also mark a change in position toward George Simion, whom Becali describes as a very intelligent and hard-working politician, but “cunning.” At the same time, the deputy declared himself dissatisfied with the motions of no confidence prepared by AUR against the ministers in the Niculescu-PSD cabinet, accusing the party of pursuing publicity above all.
In recent weeks, Simion has insisted that the relationship between AUR and Călin Georgescu is a good one, while Georgescu has thanked the party for its support.
