Two former U.S. ambassadors to Bucharest, Adrian Zuckerman and Mark Gitenstein, along with Ronald Gidwitz, former acting U.S. representative to the EU, and James S. Gilmore III, former governor of Virginia, have called for the withdrawal of the U.S. visa for George Simion, the leader of the AUR party.
In an editorial published in The Jerusalem Post, they highlight concerns regarding Simion's political profile, which may be incompatible with American values. Although Simion presents himself as pro-American, the authors of the editorial note that he has avoided condemning Russia's aggression and has had favorable positions towards the Kremlin.
Additionally, AUR has opposed the deployment of American military capabilities in Romania and has rejected measures against Russian incursions. Simion is also banned in Moldova and Ukraine, and the former Minister of Defense of Moldova stated that he serves Russia's interests. The authors conclude that the United States should reevaluate whether Simion deserves the privilege of a visa, considering these facts.
