Local police officers in Baia Mare have started to inform the population about the new sanctions, displaying informational materials on the main boulevards. Since the beginning of the year, more than 300 fines have been handed out for begging, but the authorities believe a tougher approach is needed to combat the phenomenon. Mayor Doru Dăncuș warned that those who encourage begging through donations risk being fined.
