The mayor of Cluj, Emil Boc, discussed on Digi24 the possibility of a referendum on special pensions, stating that it would have a consultative character, similar to the 2009 referendum for reducing the number of parliamentarians. Boc emphasized that, although such a referendum could strengthen the legitimacy of the initiative, the final decision belongs to Parliament and the Constitutional Court.

His statements come in the context where several members of the Government, including the Minister of Development, Cseke Attila, have suggested organizing a referendum to facilitate the adoption of a law regarding special pensions. Boc insisted on the need to reform the special pensions system, recalling that in the past it was eliminated by applying the principle of contribution. He encouraged the continuation of reform efforts, mentioning that, although battles have been lost, the war for a fair system must be won.
