The egg crisis in Romania has led to the inability to sell half of the domestic production, as farms do not meet welfare criteria for hens. This has resulted in rising prices and a limited supply in stores. In the first seven months of the year, Romanian farmers exported over 600 million eggs, representing 40% of production, to markets in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy, where they are facing an egg crisis due to avian influenza. External prices are 25% more favorable than domestic ones, prompting farmers to opt for export. In Romania, the shelves are emptier, and the available eggs are more expensive. Most eggs from Romanian farms are of type COD 3, coming from hens raised in cages, which are no longer sold starting this year. Although Romania has a self-sufficiency rate of 120%, stock issues persist, and consumers may face temporary shortages.
