Avian flu is spreading rapidly in Germany, causing farmers to cull hundreds of thousands of birds to prevent the spread of the virus. Over 30 farms have been affected, with approximately 400,000 chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys culled, according to the German Federal Institute for Animal Health (FLI). The largest losses have been in northeastern Germany, particularly in the states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg, where tens of thousands of birds have been culled. The highly contagious H5N1 virus also affects wild birds, and the risk of infection increases during the autumn migration. Although no cases of transmission to humans have been reported, authorities have imposed strict measures to control the outbreaks. FLI expects an increase in cases in the coming period.
