Diana Șoșoacă, Member of the European Parliament and former senator in the Romanian Parliament, has been sent to trial by prosecutors from the Prosecutor's Office next to the High Court of Cassation and Justice for four offenses of deprivation of liberty, following an incident on December 10, 2021, involving a team of Italian journalists. Her former husband, Silvestru Șoșoacă, is also implicated in the same case.

"On December 10, 2021, the two defendants deprived four individuals (three injured persons and a witness) of their liberty, who had been invited to the office of the defendant in Bucharest for an interview. In the same context, the second defendant committed acts of violence against one of the injured persons, hitting her with fists in the shoulder area and across the arm and tearing off her sanitary mask from her face," the statement from the Public Ministry shows.

Prosecutors argue that the deprivation of liberty was generated by Diana Șoșoacă's dissatisfaction with the uncomfortable questions posed by the RAI journalist and not by any crimes committed by the injured parties.

The journalist filed a complaint, stating that she was assaulted by Șoșoacă's husband and that the atmosphere deteriorated abruptly during the interview. Although she enjoys parliamentary immunity, the acts are not related to her legislative activity, and the indictment has been sent to the High Court for trial. The incident has attracted international attention, being reported by the Italian press as an attempted kidnapping.
