The section for judges of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) has requested the Government of Romania to take urgent measures to unblock the admission competitions for the judiciary, suspended until 2026. Currently, there are 751 vacant judge positions out of a total of 5,070, which severely affects the proper functioning of justice. CSM emphasizes that the lack of judges, combined with the increasing workload, generates a deficit of human resources, endangering the quality of the justice act. Additionally, the instability of the magistrate's status and attacks on the professional body can lead to voluntary departures from the system. CSM warns that the courts in Romania are facing excessive overload, and legislative measures to fill the vacant positions are essential to ensure citizens' access to justice within a reasonable timeframe.
