The Bucharest Court of Appeal has ordered the preventive detention of Călin Georgescu and Ionel Rusen to be extended by 30 days in the case in which DIICOT prosecutors accuse the two of defrauding a businessman of more than one million euros. In its reasoning, the court said there is still reasonable suspicion of their involvement in the investigated acts.

The judges consider the evidence gathered so far credible and capable of convincing an objective and impartial observer. The court rejected the defense’s arguments, including the defendants’ lack of prior convictions, finding that these were insufficient to justify their release.

An important element cited in the reasoning is the risk that Călin Georgescu could evade criminal prosecution or influence the conduct of the proceedings. The judges referred to his plans to leave for Italy and seek political asylum.

The court considers that releasing him would pose a danger to public order and that the risk of further criminal acts can be eliminated only through the most severe preventive measure. Preventive detention does not constitute a conviction.
