On Monday, the Bucharest Tribunal ruled that judicial supervision is sufficient for Călin Georgescu and rejected DIICOT’s request to extend his pre-trial detention. According to the court’s reasoning, detention is no longer justified because the case file contains no minimum evidence demonstrating the commission of the newly alleged offenses.

The judge found that the alleged intention to alter or destroy certain means of evidence is not supported by the evidence cited by prosecutors and amounts only to speculation. The court also established that the defendants did not evade the criminal investigation and did not attempt to influence the administration of evidence.

The reasoning states that releasing them would not pose a concrete danger to public order, while deprivation of liberty would be disproportionate to the aim pursued. However, the judges specified that suspicions concerning the offense of fraud remain.

DIICOT has appealed the decision, and the appeal is due to be heard by the Bucharest Court of Appeal. The period of pre-trial detention expires on Wednesday, October 28, meaning Georgescu could be released if the court does not rule on the appeal by then.
