The Ministry of Transport has approved a project that will bring metropolitan trains to a new city in Romania

Constanța will get a metropolitan rail service after the project was approved by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, State Secretary Horațiu Cosma announced. The network could directly serve more than 500,000 residents, or over 75% of the county’s population.

In the first phase, three rail routes are priorities: Constanța–Cernavodă, Constanța–Năvodari–Petromidia–Corbu, and Constanța–Mangalia–2 Mai. They are expected to provide faster connections between the county’s towns, Constanța, industrial areas, and seaside resorts.

The project provides for the eventual extension of the network to Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport, as well as the analysis of connections such as Medgidia–Valea Dacilor–Cobadin–Negru Vodă, Medgidia–Năvodari, and Eforie Nord–Techirghiol.

CFR is to intervene to remove speed restrictions and repair and modernize the infrastructure. Local authorities will be able to develop Park&Ride and Bike&Ride parking facilities around railway stations, connections to public transport, bicycle lanes, modern platforms, and safe railway crossings.

According to the official, the metropolitan rail service should become an alternative to private cars and reduce time lost in traffic and pollution. Constanța joins similar projects developed or being prepared in Brașov, Târgu Mureș, Bucharest, and Iași.
