Mayor Emil Boc announced, during the Local Council meeting on October 1, that the Cluj-Napoca metro project has not been abandoned and benefits from a new financing contract with a total value of 2 billion euros. The new completion deadline for the metro line is 2032.
Of the allocated amount, 357 million euros come from the 2021–2027 Transport Operational Programme, with an implementation period extended until December 31, 2029. The funding includes 305 million euros from the European Union, 46 million euros from the national budget, and 7 million euros from the local budget.
By the end of 2029, 8.8 kilometers of metro line should be completed. The first two stations, Copiilor and Sănătății, are in the design stage, with the documentation submitted for review and approval on September 28.
Emil Boc stated that the pace of the works must be accelerated and that delays will not be tolerated, as European funds have a strict deadline. The project for Line I provides for 19 underground stations and a route measuring 21.03 kilometers, which will connect the commune of Florești to Cluj-Napoca and continue to the Sopor area, where the depot is planned.
