CFR SA has announced that, starting from March 16, 2026, modernization works will begin on the Bucharest Progresu – Giurgiu line, with a contract worth 2.1 billion lei. The project aims to modernize the railway infrastructure over a sector of 58 km, which currently allows trains to cover the distance in approximately 80 minutes. The reopening of traffic is planned for September 2028.
The works will include the electrification of the line, modernization of signaling installations, and implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System ERTMS Level 2. During the works, train traffic will be suspended on certain segments, and passenger transport will be provided by shuttle buses. The contract was signed with the RailWorks Association, having a total duration of 158 months, including design and execution of the works.
