The plenary of the Chamber of Deputies has adopted a law that extends the price cap on food until December 31, 2026, but has removed the obligation for processors to limit their profit margin to 20%. This change, supported by the Association of Large Commercial Networks in Romania (AMRCR), allows operators in the supply chain to freely set their profit margin, contrary to the goal of combating rising prices.

Representatives of AMRCR and the National Association of Small and Medium Traders in Romania (ANCMMR) warn that these changes do not provide protection for vulnerable consumers and may worsen their situation. Additionally, high inflation and declining consumption further complicate the functioning of the food sector. The bill has also been adopted by the Senate, with the Chamber of Deputies having the final say in this case.
