The Bucharest Municipality will launch a smart traffic light project at 580 intersections, aimed at reducing traffic congestion, lowering pollution levels, and prioritizing public transport. The total investment is estimated at 51.9 million euros, funds that will be drawn from non-reimbursable European sources.

The intersections will be equipped with magnetometric sensors, advanced video cameras, and automated traffic management systems, integrated with artificial intelligence programs. These will allow for the synchronization of traffic lights and the adjustment of traffic light timings based on traffic flow. An important aspect of the project is the prioritization of public transport, ensuring favorable timings for buses and trolleybuses.

Implementation will take place in four stages, starting with the modernization of the first 92 intersections, followed by the establishment of a command center and the modernization of other intersections. Feasibility studies for the first stages are nearly completed, and the documentation for accessing European funds is in preparation. Authorities estimate that this system will bring significant benefits for traffic flow and improve air quality in the Capital.
