Bucharest City Hall begins work at Curtea Veche: two million lei allocated to secure the monument

Bucharest City Hall has ordered the start of work at Curtea Veche, the city’s first princely court and the oldest medieval monument in the capital. The intervention aims to halt structural deterioration and protect the historic masonry affected by water infiltration, bad weather and a lack of conservation measures.

The work will cost two million lei and is scheduled to last three months. At this stage, the complete restoration of the complex is not planned; the objective is to secure it and preserve the existing elements.

Construction workers will repair and rebuild the roofs, protect the walls, vaults and surfaces exposed to environmental factors, and build a temporary roof. The solution is necessary to allow archaeological investigations to continue.

City Hall says the monument was left derelict for years, with rain entering the interior and weeds growing there. An attempt to secure the site, launched in 2018, was halted in 2020 and abandoned without the implementation of minimum conservation measures.

After the emergency intervention is completed, Bucharest City Hall announces that it will proceed with the restoration of Curtea Veche. Until 2015, a museum operated here. The complex is linked to the history of rulers such as Vlad the Impaler, Michael the Brave, Matei Basarab and Constantin Brâncoveanu, with the city of Bucharest developing around it.
