According to Eurostat data, residents of Bucharest and Cluj have a higher purchasing power than those in Madrid, as well as in major cities like Milan and Hamburg. Bucharest records a GDP per capita of 87,400 PPS (purchasing power standard), exceeding the European average of 38,000 PPS by more than two times, while Cluj residents are above the EU average with a purchasing power standard of over 43,000.

Other counties such as Timiș, Constanța, Brașov, Prahova, and Gorj are approaching the European average, indicating regional economic growth. In contrast, the counties of Vaslui and Botoșani have the lowest purchasing power, and other regions in Romania remain among the poorest in the European Union, alongside areas in Bulgaria and Hungary. The most disadvantaged counties in Romania include Suceava, Călărași, Giurgiu, Botoșani, and Vaslui.
