Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan discussed with the miners from the Oltenia Energy Complex, dissatisfied with the reduction of staff and the expiration of contracts for nearly 1,800 employees. The protesters demanded the extension of contracts or salary compensation, but the discussions ended without result, and tensions escalated, with some demonstrators clashing with the gendarmes and threatening a general strike.
Bolojan stated that "the social situation is understandable," but emphasized that the measures are inevitable, being assumed by Romania in front of the European Commission and included in the restructuring and decarbonization plan initiated in 2020. In the context of losses of approximately 1 billion lei and high costs for CO₂ certificates, the Government maintains that contracts cannot be extended nor compensation granted, as these are not provided for by labor legislation.
