The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, characterized on Thursday the appointment of Eugen Tomac for the position of prime minister as "an act of responsibility" on his part and argued that the nominee "has independence, experience, and the necessary values."

"Because the parties do not understand each other, the only solution is a prime minister who is independent of the parties in Parliament and who will lead Romania in the direction that Romanians want, namely a pro-Western direction. I chose as a proposal for prime minister a person who has political experience to discuss with each of the parties in Parliament, because consensus is needed. It is an act of responsibility on my part and I expect the same responsibility from the political parties. He has independence, experience, and values," said Nicușor Dan.

The speech of President Nicușor Dan:

In May 2025, Romanians had elections, they turned out in large numbers to vote, they voted more negatively than positively because they had two fears. The first - that the pro-Western direction may be up for discussion, and the second - economic, a downgrade in rating, rising rates, inflation, a short decline in the Romanian economy.

In June 2025, understanding the message of Romanians, four parties and national minorities formed a coalition and assumed governance. A year after this moment, the external image of Romania and trust in Romania are much better than a year ago. Only that during this process tensions arose within the parties in the coalition. Unfortunately, we have reached a point where, for many politicians, party interest prevails over national interest.

It has come to seem, I emphasize, to seem, that part of society is more interested in vendettas than in the policies of Romania as a state. It has come to seem normal that the political forces against which Romanians mobilized are invited to be part of the governing act. I believe that such an attitude is irrational and goes against the national interest.

Who is to blame for the fact that this coalition has functioned as it has? We had a debate, people form a perception about what the parties they voted for have done. This debate will continue, but it is important to look to the future rather than what has happened so far.

And, because the parties do not understand each other, the only possible solution is a Prime Minister who is independent of the parties in Parliament, who will succeed through individual discussions with each of these parties to lead Romania in the direction that Romanians want. This means a pro-Western direction, this means maintaining financial stability, and here we have the best completion of the PNRR by the end of August and defining the budget for 2027. Romanians want the reform of state institutions, Romanians want digitization, and, obviously, Romanians want to limit corruption.

I chose as a proposal for prime minister a person who has political experience to discuss with each of the parties in Parliament, because consensus is needed.

It is an act of responsibility on my part and I expect the same responsibility from the political parties. He has independence, experience, and values.
