Alexandru Toader, the son of former Constitutional Court judge Tudorel Toader, was placed under house arrest on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, by the High Court of Cassation and Justice, in the case in which he is being investigated for rape and sexual assault. The decision is final.
The Supreme Court admitted the appeal filed by Toader against the decision of the Iași Court of Appeal, which had ordered his pretrial detention for 30 days. The High Court replaced the measure with house arrest for a period of 19 days, until and including November 21.
During the measure, the defendant is not allowed to leave his home without the permission of the judicial authority and must appear for hearings whenever summoned. He was also prohibited from communicating with the injured parties and the witnesses in the case. The court warned that violating the obligations could lead to house arrest being replaced with pretrial detention.
Alexandru Toader, a teaching staff member at „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași, is being investigated by the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Iași Court of Appeal after two female students reported him. They claim that he allegedly asked them for sexual favors in exchange for giving them passing grades on exams. The allegations are being investigated, and the defendant benefits from the presumption of innocence.
