Alexandru Muraru claims that the PSD would lose half of its seats if it blocked the Mureșan Government and triggered snap elections

PNL lawmaker Alexandru Muraru says the PSD could lose approximately half of its parliamentary seats in the event of an early election if it refuses to vote for the government proposed by designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan. He made the statement on Sunday, ahead of a PSD leadership meeting scheduled for Monday, when the Social Democrats are expected to discuss Mureșan’s designation.

According to Muraru, the PSD currently has 126 lawmakers, including 91 deputies and 35 senators, while simulations he presented indicate a reduction to approximately 63 seats. The Liberal lawmaker says the party would be the “only party” to emerge from a possible early election with half as many seats.

Muraru published two charts bearing the PNL logo. One estimates the distribution of seats, while the other cites an internal poll commissioned by USR, according to which AUR would receive between 30% and 32% of voting intentions, PNL 20%, USR 16%, and PSD between 10% and 12%.

The Liberal accused the PSD of “sabotage” and argued that the party no longer holds the dominant position it has in the current Parliament. Mureșan is attempting to form a government supported by PNL, USR and UDMR, but the three parties do not jointly have the required majority.

The Constitution allows Parliament to be dissolved only after at least two requests for a vote of confidence have been rejected, within 60 days of the first request. Dissolution is an option available to the president, not an automatic consequence.
