The former deputy director of SIS Moldova, Alexandru Bălan, has been released from preventive detention and placed under judicial control, being required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.
He is being tried by DIICOT for attempted treason and espionage, being accused of providing state secrets to KGB officers from Belarus during conspiratorial meetings in Budapest. Although he is at liberty, Bălan is permanently monitored via GPS to prevent him from fleeing the country, while the trial continues at the Bucharest Court of Appeal. The case is considered a first and a major security breach at the regional level.
