The investigation by the German authorities led to the arrest of a Romanian woman, Alla S., and a Ukrainian man, Sergey N., on suspicion of espionage for a foreign intelligence service.
The two were apprehended in the spring of this year, the man in Spain and the woman in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Federal Public Prosecutor in Germany issued arrest warrants, but the charges do not include attempted murder or terrorism. The investigation began in December 2025, when Sergey N. started monitoring the residence and company of Stefan Thumann, the director of Donaustahl, a Bavarian firm involved in the production of drones for defense.
After N.'s departure, Alla S. continued the surveillance, and the information gathered is said to have been passed on. Thumann now benefits from permanent protection from the authorities, following information indicating an increased risk to his safety. The investigation is considered one of the most significant counter-espionage efforts in Germany, given the intensification of Russian intelligence activities in the defense sector.
