The Italian authorities arrested two people on Tuesday, including a former member of the secret services, on charges of espionage in favor of Russia. The prosecutor's office in Rome announced that the main defendant, a 59-year-old former military police officer, is accused of transferring classified information and unauthorized access to telecommunications services. The case, opened in May 2025, also targets five other individuals.
The defendant allegedly received money to pass information to a Russian agent, who enjoys diplomatic immunity in Italy. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated that this investigation highlights external threats and internal betrayals, emphasizing the Italian government's support for Ukraine. In the past, another Italian officer was convicted of espionage in favor of Russia, which indicates an alarming trend among intelligence agents.
