In southern Romania, communities near the Danube are facing an alarming increase in jackal attacks on farm animals. Locals complain that the predators appear almost every night, causing significant losses to shepherds. The golden jackal, an adaptable species, has rapidly spread in the area, taking advantage of the absence of natural predators.
Local authorities, such as the mayor of Călărași, are calling for firmer interventions, including modern equipment for population control. A plan has been established to capture 400 jackals by the end of the year, considering estimates of 2,400 individuals in the biosphere. Specialists suggest alternative solutions, such as electric fences and alarm systems, to protect animals without affecting the jackal population in the long term. Affected communities are awaiting quick solutions to prevent the situation from worsening.
