Senate President and Liberal Mircea Abrudean said Monday that organizing a new congress of the National Liberal Party could help definitively clarify the situation within the party. The statement comes as the conservative platform within the PNL is calling for a congress and challenging the current leadership.
Abrudean noted that representatives of this group had the opportunity to take part in the previous congress but did not put forward a rival candidate. He added, however, that the congress was subsequently suspended by the courts and suggested that a new gathering could provide the party with a clear solution.
The senator stressed that the decision on organizing the congress belongs to the PNL’s statutory bodies. He said it was normal for dissenting members to express their views within the party, particularly at the congress, which he described as the highest decision-making body.
Asked about a possible candidacy by Alin Tișe, president of the Cluj County Council, Abrudean said there could be several rival candidates. According to him, each leader’s influence will be determined by the delegates’ vote at the congress, not by public statements made beforehand.
