CFR Călători, 90% discount for students: What are the conditions for the 2026-2027 academic year

CFR Călători announced on Monday that Romanian or foreign students up to the age of 30, enrolled in full-time education programs at accredited higher education institutions in Romania and at the Romanian Academy, are entitled to a 90% discount on train travel in second class on Regio, InterRegio, and InterCity trains.

The benefit is valid exclusively for the route between the place of residence and the locality where the educational institution is located. The discount also applies to orphaned students or those from residential care centers, substitute families, or in foster care. For first class, sleeping cars, and couchettes, the fare differences must be paid in full.

Tickets and season tickets can be purchased from CFR Călători ticket offices and agencies, online, through the app, from station vending machines, or, in certain cases, on the train. Until November 30, 2026, they can be obtained based on the identification card validated for the 2025–2026 academic year. First-year students may present an original certificate for the 2026–2027 academic year. From December 1, the identification card for the 2026–2027 academic year is required.

Romanians studying full-time abroad receive a 50% discount, valid in second class, for any distance. They must present their student document, its certified translation, and their identity document.
