Lee Mendelson Film Productions, the owner of the copyright for the TV specials "Peanuts", has filed lawsuits against several defendants, including the Trump administration, accusing them of illegal use of the songs in posts on social media and in a game.
The legal actions have been filed in federal courts in New York and Washington, D.C. One of the lawsuits claims that the Department of the Interior did not have permission to use Vince Guaraldi's arrangement of "O Tannenbaum" from "A Charlie Brown Christmas" in a digital greeting card posted on social media.
Lee Mendelson Film Productions, founded by producer Lee Mendelson, collaborated with the creator of "Peanuts", Charles Schulz, to create the TV specials starting with "A Charlie Brown Christmas" in 1965. Mendelson, who passed away in 2019, hired jazz pianist Guaraldi to compose the melancholic music, including "Christmas Time Is Here" and "Linus and Lucy".
