The original bag created for actress Jane Birkin has been sold in Paris for a record €8.6 million. It was designed in 1984 by Jean-Louis Dumas, the director of Hermes, after Birkin expressed the need for a stylish and functional bag. The bag, worn for nine years by the actress, was auctioned to support a charitable cause. The price is the highest ever recorded for a fashion item.
