The black silk dress, created by designer Christina Stambolian, became famous after Princess Diana wore it to a charity dinner held in London in 1994. The outfit, with a plunging neckline and a hem above the knee, defied royal dress conventions.
Dubbed the “revenge dress,” it was worn on the evening when Prince Charles publicly acknowledged his relationship with Camilla Parker-Bowles. The dress will be exhibited in London and other cities before the Sotheby’s auction in New York, scheduled for December 9. Part of the proceeds will go to a charity organization of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.
