The 55 member federations of the European Football Association (UEFA) will urgently meet at the end of this week to analyze FIFA's controversial plans to sell external stakes in its major competitions.
On Tuesday, FIFA announced its intention to establish a company to manage the World Cup and other events, offering external investors up to 20% of the shares.
This proposal has sparked furious reactions from UEFA, which accused FIFA of putting the "soul" of football up for sale, raising concerns that private investors will gain excessive influence over the competitions. The UEFA meeting will take place online and will allow for the development of an action plan.
Although FIFA will retain control over the company, it is estimated that it will raise up to $4.2 billion from the sale of minority shares.
