Dick Advocaat, the Dutch coach aged 78, has announced that he is stepping down from his position as the national team coach of Curaçao due to health reasons concerning his daughter. In a statement, he emphasized that family is a priority and that, although he will miss Curaçao and his colleagues, the decision was clear.
Advocaat is considered a hero of football in Curaçao, having achieved the qualification of this nation for the first time to a World Cup final tournament. After two years at the helm of the team, he will be replaced by Fred Rutten, a former Dutch international with experience at clubs such as PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord. Curaçao will participate in the 2026 World Cup, with matches scheduled against Germany, Ecuador, and the Ivory Coast.
