The match between Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Bilbao, in the eighth round of the Spanish league, was definitively suspended after approximately 30 minutes of play, following a protest by the home team’s supporters.
The fans of the team for which Romanian international Andrei Rațiu plays expressed their dissatisfaction with the club’s management and threw paper airplanes and rubber balls onto the pitch.
The incident occurred in the 10th minute, during a corner for the visiting team, according to AS. One of the assistant referees was hit by objects thrown from the stands.
The referee decided to stop the game and asked the players of both teams to withdraw to the dressing rooms. Although the match was initially interrupted, the Rayo Vallecano – Athletic Bilbao game was subsequently definitively suspended.
The supporters’ protest affected the first match of the eighth round of the Primera División. For the time being, no information has been provided regarding the date on which the match might be resumed or the sanctions that could be imposed on the Madrid club.
