The Belgian Football Federation announced on Friday the appointment of Mark van Bommel as the new head coach of the national team, replacing Rudi Garcia. Van Bommel, at 49 years old and with 79 caps for the Netherlands, has signed a contract valid until EURO 2028. He will start his duties on August 15. In the last two years, van Bommel has not coached any team, after leading Royal Antwerp to win the championship and the Belgian Cup in the 2022-2023 season. He also has international experience, having served as Bert van Marwijk's assistant for the Australian national team at the 2018 World Cup. Mark van Bommel becomes the second Dutchman to take charge of the Belgian national team, after Dick Advocaat. In the last major competition, Belgium was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup, after a close match with Spain (1-2).
