The athlete qualified on Tuesday for the final of the 100 m freestyle event at the European Senior Swimming Championships, held in Paris. In the semifinals, he recorded a time of 46.72, thus setting a new competition record and the best time of the semifinals. In second place was the Spaniard Luca Hoek le Guenedal with 47.26, while the Russian Egor Kornev took third place with 47.27.
In the heats, Popovici achieved a time of 47.13, also the best of the stage. David Popovici holds two consecutive European titles in the 100 m freestyle, won in Rome 2022 and Belgrade 2024, as well as the competition record of 46.86 seconds, set in Rome. The world record is held by the Chinese Pan Zhanle from 2024. The final will take place on Wednesday evening.
