The Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Alexandru Munteanu, announced his resignation today, eight months after taking office. Munteanu stated that he accepted the position with responsibility, but decided to leave when he realized that he could no longer act according to his beliefs. In his message on Facebook, he thanked his colleagues and emphasized that the duty towards the country does not depend on a position.
Alexandru Munteanu was appointed Prime Minister on November 1, 2025, with the main objectives of accelerating the country's European path and increasing the minimum wage. With his resignation, the entire Government automatically resigns, and President Maia Sandu will appoint an interim Prime Minister. This person will need to obtain the confidence vote of Parliament for a new Executive. If a new Government is not formed, the President can dissolve Parliament.
