Maia Sandu: "Without the withdrawal of Russian troops, the reintegration of Transnistria is impossible"

In a recent interview, the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, discussed regional security and the European path of the country. She stated that integration into the European Union is essential for the survival of Moldovan democracy, in the context of Russia's aggression. Sandu identified Russia as the biggest challenge, mentioning external pressure and internal difficulties related to judicial system reforms. The authorities in Chișinău are working to accelerate reforms, including in the fields of justice and anti-corruption.

Regarding Transnistria, Sandu highlighted the attempts for economic rapprochement between the two banks of the Nistru, but emphasized that the presence of Russian troops represents a major obstacle. She proposed a gradual approach to resolving the conflict, with the integration of the right bank into the EU first, followed by the reintegration of Transnistria. Sandu stressed that decisions regarding the future of the region should not depend on Moscow, highlighting the need for the withdrawal of Russian troops for complete reintegration. She also mentioned Estonia's support for Moldova's European path.
