Border police officers in Giurgiu discovered 1,100 grams of yellow-metal jewelry resembling gold, estimated at approximately 660,000 lei, hidden in two pillows on the back seat of a car. The vehicle was driven by a 37-year-old woman, a citizen of the Republic of Moldova, traveling on the Turkey–Moldova route.
The discovery was made on October 6, during a BLITZ operation conducted on National Road 5 to prevent and combat illegal migration and cross-border crime. The vehicle, registered in the Republic of Moldova, was stopped for a routine check.
During the inspection, officers found the jewelry hidden in the pillows. The woman was unable to present documents regarding its provenance. The goods were seized for expert examination and further investigation, including to determine whether they are made of gold and their exact value.
Border police officers opened a criminal case concerning offenses related to goods or merchandise that must be placed under a customs regime and that may originate from smuggling. Legal measures will be taken once the investigation is completed.
