Cloudflare, an American cybersecurity company, reported coordinated cyberattacks on the website of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Moldova during the parliamentary elections on September 28. The attacks, which peaked at 324,333 requests per second, were part of a broader campaign of Russian interference. The Moldovan government requested Cloudflare's assistance to protect the electoral infrastructure, and the company was able to quickly integrate security measures to keep the electoral websites functional.
In total, Cloudflare mitigated over 898 million malicious requests over the course of twelve hours. Although the CEC was the main target, other election-related and public information websites were also attacked. Cloudflare emphasized the importance of protecting the democratic process and ensured that citizens had access to official information during the elections.
