The Director of the Customs Service, Radu Vrabie, stated that the arms smuggling detected at the Albița customs point was likely organized as early as 2023, with the most attempts occurring between 2024 and 2025. Investigations are ongoing, without evidence of involvement from customs employees. Five individuals have been detained, including the exporter, the customs broker, and the carrier, arrested in Moldova, as well as the truck driver, who is in custody in Romania. Vrabie mentioned that the illegal transports were not carried out in the same shift, but likely through the same customs point. The incident led to a review of internal procedures and additional controls. Vrabie also emphasized the vulnerability of the customs system to corruption, noting that 54 employees have been suspended in the last three years, of which only one was found guilty.
