Four Nădlac border police officers are being prosecuted for accepting bribes after allegedly receiving various sums of money on several occasions to allow shipments of pigs without the required documents to enter Romania from Hungary.
According to investigators, the animals were allegedly transported without proof-of-origin documents, accompanying cargo documents or veterinary health certificates. By allowing these shipments, the officers allegedly breached their duties and border-control procedures.
On Thursday, as part of the investigation, five residential searches were conducted in Arad and Timiș counties. The searches aim to gather evidence concerning the receipt of the money, how the animals were allegedly brought into the country and the links between the people involved.
The case is under criminal investigation, and the allegations must be proven in judicial proceedings. New information obtained during the searches could clarify the frequency of the shipments, the sums of money offered and the responsibilities of each border police officer.
